It’s official! Pottermore is now open to the public!

According to a post seen on the Pottermore Insider, they will be activating new registrations over the coming days in a steady stream. Go to Pottermore.com to sign up.

After you’ve signed up, you’ll get sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses, have a wand choose you, and discover exclusive new writing from J.K. Rowling. In addition, you’ll be able to purchase Harry Potter ebooks and digital audio books at the Pottermore shop.

JK Rowling Announces Release Date and Title of New Book

Little, Brown Book Group announced today that the new novel for adults by J.K. Rowling is entitled The Casual Vacancy. The book, containing approximately 480 pages, will be published worldwide in the English language in hardback, ebook, unabridged audio download and on CD on Thursday 27th September 2012.

About the Book: The Casual Vacancy

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Waiting for Pottermore

For those of you who have been waiting patiently for Pottermore to be open to the public, fret no more! According to the Pottermore Insider, Pottermore will be open to the public in April 2012.

Money quote: “We gathered some incredibly useful feedback from our Beta users, and it became clear that our original platform wouldn’t be suitable when millions more users came on to the site. So we made a big decision: to move Pottermore to an entirely different platform set up. This ‘invisible’ change has involved a lot of work behind the scenes but it will enable our users to get the best from Pottermore as it grows and develops.”

I will admit that I haven’t been on Pottermore much (RL got in the way), but for those of you who have been, let us know what you think. Out of all of us, Ari has been the one most active with the Pottermore beta. We may discuss this in an upcoming episode.

J.K. Rowling Announces New Novel

Hat tip to hypable.com. It was announced that J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, will soon publish a new novel for adults. The publisher will be Little, Brown in the United States.

On the Blair Partnership website, Rowling wrote, “Although I’ve enjoyed writing it just as much, my next novel will be very different from the Harry Potter series.”

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Coming to Los Angeles

The rumours are true!

As was announced via the live blog hosted at hypable.com, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. During a special press event today, executives said that “The Wizarding World WILL be in the existing theme park, and be ‘every bit as spectactular’ as Orlando.”

“Once you see Hogwarts castle, and when you ride Forbidden Journey, you will find it an unforgettable experience. This will change the face of tourism. We plan to invest several hundred million. We will create over a thousand jobs at Universal and more indirectly.”

That should make those in Southern California quite happy as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios Orlando has been very popular since it opened in June 2010.

Not only will there be a new Wizarding World in Los Angeles, representatives of Warner Bros. and Universal Studios had a second announcement: “Wizarding World Orlando will be expanding greatly! We’ll be sharing more details in the future,” they said today.

Harry Potter fandom is entering a new phase, even though the book and film series are now complete. “There are now 8 films behind us and the future of Potter are looking brighter today than ever.”

“We’re now entering the next phase of what Harry Potter will mean. The Harry Potter fan is a unique individual. He or she is committed, dedicated, and unbelievably demanding. It’s why, in the making of 8 films, we kept a laser focus on quality. We’ve found a partner for the next phase of Harry Potter, and Universal is that partner. We are committed to excellence.”

The new project will be developed in close collaboration with the creators of the films, set designers and artists to recreate the Harry Potter experience in Hollywood.

California governor Jerry Brown stated, “It’s a great day when we see investment in California, investment in imagination.”

Even the Los Angeles Commissioner, who wasn’t identified by name, was getting excited about this announcement, despite the fact that he never watched the films nor read the books. “When I was invited to say a few words, my staff conspired to get me a DVD of the first movie. Over the weekend I watched the movie. I’m not a big fiction movie person. I like political/documentary. After watching this movie I can tell you there are some public policy connections.”

“First of all the wand. I see the possibility of the wand being used to produce $13 billion for the state budget. As far as the broomsticks are concerned… is there a better way to navigate the 405 during rush hour? Los Angeles county is the movie capital of the nation and world. Hogwarts coming to Hollywood is fitting. The most successful franchise of all time deserves to have a West Coast home in Los Angeles.”

This is one game I really want my kids to get… so I can watch them play it, and even play it myself. Years 1-4 is funny and a great experience, but I think this will be much better… It’s very well adapted, I hear, plus there are things from the books that are not necessarily in the movies.

I know that it’s been a while since it was released, but I just watched this trailer and I had to share it with you guys… If you have already watched it, enjoy it once more!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the first Harry Potter film was released. On November 16, 2001, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone premiered in theaters.

SHP064: Forgiveness and Redemption

In this special SQPN Podcast Marathon episode of ‘The Secrets of Harry Potter’, Jim Beeghley, Fr. Roderick, and Lyn Francisco discuss the topic of forgiveness and redemption in the Harry Potter series.They were joined by special guest Denise Roper, author of The Lord of the Hallows: Christian Symbolism and Themes in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter.

First, the redemption of Severus Snape was discussed. He had made one mistake with his childhood friend, Lily Evans, and his later actions indirectly led to Lily’s death. After having gone to Albus Dumbledore and promising to do everything he could to protect Lily’s son, Harry, Snape’s actions were dedicated towards atoning for that mistake. Lyn compared Snape during his death scene to Simeon in the temple from Luke 2:29-32. Simeon had seen in the child Jesus “the salvation… the light of revelation…” and declared that as a result, the Master (God) was ‘letting [His] servant go in peace”. Snape, as he was looking upon Harry’s eyes for the final time, was set free of his two masters (Dumbledore and Voldemort), turning over the final task of killing Voldemort to Harry, who himself can be seen as a Messianic figure.

Neville Longbottom was another character whose story of redemption resonated well with others. He was discounted as a “nearly Squib” until his Great Uncle Algie accidentally dropped him from a window, and Neville bounced. He went from a shy, underconfident boy to a self-assured young man, specialising in Herbology and one of the eventual heroes of the Hogwarts Final Battle. Fr. Roderick compared Neville to the Suffering Servant from Isaiah 53: the servant would be battered and bruised, and people would not think very highly of him. It was a reference to a coming Messiah. He thinks Neville is more of a Messiah figure or archetype of a saviour than Harry is, mainly because of the suffering that Neville had endured, and his rising above it, redeeming himself through his actions leading up to, and during the Final Battle.

The redemption stories of Regulus Black and his house-elf, Kreacher, Sirius Black, Percy Weasley, and Dudley Dursley were discussed as well. Jim compared Percy Weasley’s reconciliation with his family to that of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32).

The Night Before Christmas and Dumbledore Came

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when through Gryffindor House
Not a house-elf was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney floos with care,
In hopes that dear Dumbledore soon would be there.

The students were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of chocolate frogs hopped in their heads.
McGonegall in her ‘kerchief, and Fat Lady in her frame,
Were satisfied their charges were settled and tame.

When out in the Quidditch field there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from our beds to see what was the matter.
Away to the window we flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow,
Gave the luster of of mid-day to objects below,
When who to our wondering eyes should arrive,
But Hagrid on Sirius’ bike, magical creatures! Alive!

With a hal-giant driver, so lively and quick,
We knew in a moment the Headmaster was near.
More rapid than snitches his creatures they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name.

“Now Aragog! Now, Fang!, Now gentle Buckbeak!
On Skrewts! And ye Thestrals1 On Fiery Dragons!
To the top of the tower! To the top of the castle!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!

As Weasley spells that commotions make fly
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the castle-top the magical creatures flew,
With the sidecar full of spells, and dear Dumbledore, too!

And then in a twinkling, we heard on the roof,
The prancing and pawing of each creature’s hoof.
As we drew in our heads, and were turning around,
Out of the floo came Dumbledore with a bound.

He was dressed all in purple, from his head to his toes,
And his clothes were all shining with crystals and bows.
He softlt called “lumos” as he looked at our room,
And set upon placing some gifts with a boom!

His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His glasses were perched on his nose like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The end of his wand he held tight in his hand.
As the sparks, they encircled his head like a band.
He had a broad face and a depth to his eye,
That danced when he laughed, and when angered was wry!

He was stoic and clever, a wizard with power,
And we cheered when we saw him, in spite of the hour!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave us to know we had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger, aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the floo then he rose!

He sprang to his escort, but knew in a fix,
That his exit was quicker on his friend the phoenix.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he flew out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
