A New Harry Potter Short Film?

January 30, 2013 — 4 Comments

Last month, it was rumoured that cast members from the “Harry Potter” films had reunited at the Warner Bros. Studios in Hertfordshire, East England, to work on a “secret project”. This project may be a short film that would screen at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Florida and the “Potter” theme parks currently under construction in California and Japan. Those rumours may turn out to be true: actress Helena Bonham Carter, who played Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange, recently hinted that she is reprising that role for this new project.

“I’m not sure what we’re allowed to say. I think we’ve been gagged!” she said when asked about her involvement in the project. Quizzed further if fans can take that as confirmation she is involved in the project, Helena added, “You can read into it what you will.”

This is very interesting news, indeed. Given Carter’s involvement, it is likely the new short film would take place before the so-called Final Battle of Hogwarts. Perhaps the new footage would be part of some sort of ride, or it might be part of a 3D experience, much like what Captain EO was for the Disney theme parks.

What are your thoughts on this news? Would you like to see more “Potter”-related films or even short films? What do you think may be in this short film? If you could give suggestions, what would you like to see in such short films?

  1. My first thoughts…

OK if it is for theme parks.

I’d rather they not release more Harry Potter films. Let them stand with the 8 originally released. I hope they don’t turn this into a never ending saga as is happening with Star Wars.

  2. I’d be happy to see some more footage. Would it follow the book or just be non-cannon stuff?

Marianna… Star Wars was originally planned to be a trilogy of trilogies. So, it’s not “never ending”.

  3. I can tell you that there is still a hunger for Harry Potter in the fandom. Pottermore seems to be going along, and they’re releasing new materials. I’m still involved in the fanfic corner of the fandom, and that is still going very well, attracting more people who want to hone their writing skills in the Potter playground. The cosplayers still go to Harry Potter-themed cons.

As for film: I’m sure as the theme parks expand, they’ll need new materials that will compliment the films, so I’m guessing that whatever they’re filming will follow canon (book or film). Who knows if they’ll deviate from that or give us something completely new? JKR has said, repeatedly, that she’s done telling Harry’s story. We’ll see. I heard the Potter park in California will open in 2014, and the Potter park in Japan will open in 2016.

  4. Pilot Bob – A “trilogy of trilogies?” Not heard that before. But, then I don’t follow Star Wars. Only what I hear from Fr. Roderick. Although it does seem “never ending.” Probably will be in my lifetime. ;-)
