Wow. I tried listening to this one, but an hour in, when Granger started telling Denise that if only she reads his book she will understand how good Twilight is, turned me off completely. The Twilight books are horribly written, full of typos, grammatical and editing errors. Bella is NOT a strong female character, she is weak and waits for her dead boyfriend to tell her what to do. She is a weak, simpering character who most definitely is not a role model for young girls or women at all. I don’t appreciate someone telling me why I don’t like a book, and that my reasons for not liking it are not valid.
I found Granger to be somewhat hypocritical in his statement that ‘it mystifies’ him that some people hate the Harry Potter books without having read them, however, he hated them without reading them. Referred to them as ‘trash’ before he read them himself. And this was just one of the comments this man made that I found quite judgmental and offensive. His shameless promotion of his books was insulting.

Louise, thank you for your feedback. I hope you weren’t too disappointed withSHP078. We were actually thrilled to have Mr. Granger on the show. I have read the first Twilight book, I strongly disliked it, and I don’t plan on reading the other books in the series or John Granger’s book on Twilight either. I completely agree with you about Bella’s weaknesses as a character also.On the other hand, I have read all of Mr. Granger’s books on the Harry Potter series and I thought they were very insightful and thought-provoking. John is a very intelligent guy and has given some really great presentations at the Harry Potter fan conventions that I have attended. It was a pleasure to meet him at Azkatraz 2009 and Infinitus 2010.

I really enjoyed John’s interview! I’ve been listening to the SQPN HP podcast for years and was very pleased to hear him featured on your program (I’ve wondered in the past why you hadn’t had him on, considering his insights into the Christian elements of the books). I first heard John as one of the “Potter Pundits” on another podcast a few years ago. At that time, frankly, I was blown away by how much more was in the HP books–especially the depth of the Christian symbolism–that I never realized. I quickly bought John’s “How Harry Cast His Spell” book, which discusses the Christian content of the books at length. This is a great book! It really started me down the path of wanting to learn more about the inner workings of the series. I’ve loaned out the book many times to folks who have no idea that any of these layers lie within the HP books. I have read Twilight as well, and I really liked them (although Denise, I read the first one and thought–eh, I could take it or leave it. But someone had lent me the whole series, so I forged ahead through the stack of books hoping it would get better. It did! The author’s creativity was quite good, and I’m a sucker for romance. Anyway, it’s no Harry Potter, but I liked them…..) And I don’t mind when John refers to his books when he’s talking about a certain subject–without that, how is the listener to know where to get more info on something in particular? That’s how I found about “How Harry Cast His Spell!” Anyway, I think this was a great interview and I really enjoyed it. Thank you!

I’ve listened to just about every episode of “The Secrets of Harry Potter,” but because I generally listen to them as part of my hour long commute, by the time I stop driving, I forget what sort of comments I might have on a particular episode. Nevertheless, this was one of the best ever. Really enjoyed it.
